NOTIFICATION OF

WATER SYSTEM FLUSHING

ALL CITY WATER SYSTEM USERS are hereby notified that the City of Langley’s water system will be flushed, weather permitting, on

Tuesday & Wednesday

MARCH 9th & 10th, 2010

The purpose of flushing the water system is to dislodge normal residue accumulations from inside the water lines.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • This process involves opening selected fire hydrants for short periods of time. Please stay clear of the area, or exercise added caution when driving near an open hydrant, for the safety of our Public Works Crew.
  • You may experience brief periods of lower-than-normal pressure as the crew flushes the lines near your residence.
  • The flushing may cause temporary discoloration of the water; however it will not present any health hazards or cause harm to your system.  Even though these solids are harmless they may cause staining. See the suggestions below.

SUGGESTIONS:

  • If your water turns brown, flush your own system by running water through your bathtub or an outdoor spigot until the water runs clear.
  • Be sure the water in your washing machine runs clear before doing your laundry in order to mitigate the remote possibility of damage to laundry items.

FOR QUESTIONS:

Please contact the City of Langley at 221-4246.

Thank you for your patience during this necessary process.

Save Money with a Free Water Conservation Kit

faucet

Stop by Langley city hall and pick up a free water conservation kit. The Public Works department is offering the kit to any household that has a water account with the city.

Decreasing your water usage can lower your water bill. It also helps the city budget by reducing the energy needed to operate the city wells.  The kit includes low-flow devices for faucets and your shower, plus leak detection tables for toilets. Instructions are included, but if you need help in using the kit let us know! This program is funded through the city’s water conservation budget mandated by the state Department of Health.

Five Businesses in Langley Go Green with Efficient Lights

village pizzeriaFive Langley businesses switched their lights for greener, more efficient alternatives and are reaping a quick payback for their bottom line and the planet.  Through simple lighting changes these businesses each cut their electric use by as much as 15 percent. At the Village Pizzeria, Paul Sarkis is saving enough energy to power a typical Langley home.

Paul Sarkis (Village Pizzeria), David Gregor (Gregor Rare Books), Misti Moore (Langley Village Bakery), Kim Tiller (Whidbey Island Soap Factory), and Gary Piper (Piper Properties) all ordered new lights as part of an efficiency campaign piloted by the City of Langley and supported by Puget Sound Energy.

Paul Sarkis completed the most significant retrofit by adding occupancy sensors to control lights automatically.  More efficient lighting was added in the dining area and the kitchen.  All of the work was supported by rebates from PSE.

Linda Irvine, Community Resource Conservation Manager for the City of Langley, coordinated PSE’s lighting rebate programs on behalf of the business owners. This helped ensure that the replacement lights were efficient and eligible for financial incentives. In some cases, the PSE rebates covered the entire cost of the new bulbs. Lee James, director of PSE’s Small Business Lighting program and a resident of Whidbey, helped shepherd the rebate applications through the process. At PSE’s South Whidbey office, Walt Blackford, supervisor of community services, and Debbie Buse, customer service representative, tracked electric use for businesses that requested a tally of their energy savings.

“PSE is committed to helping Whidbey businesses—and all its customers—get smart about energy efficiency,” said Blackford. “The new lighting these local businesses are using is better for everyone. They lower operating costs and help the environment because they reduce their overall carbon footprint.”

These business owners are part of a growing trend toward green business practices that recognize the lifecycle cost of products and the long-term impact of purchasing decisions. The Langley lighting retrofits will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of planting 2.6 acres of trees, while saving thousands of dollars over the life of the lights.

Langley Expanding Parking through Joint Use Project

cascade The Municipal Parking Joint Use Project will provide 50 public parking spaces on the corner of 6th Street and Cascade Avenue at the existing Christian Missionary Alliance Church (CMA) parking area.

The City of Langley will improve the church parking area through paving, landscaping, lighting and upgrading the storm water system to current environmental and Low Impact Development standards. In exchange for the improvements there will be designated public parking spaces for use during the work week.

Grants for this project were awarded in 2005 and 2006, but due to the private/public partnership the state and federal funding approval was just secured in 2009. When completed, the parking lot will connect to the Island Transit bus route and the Cascade Avenue walkway to downtown and the Langley marina. The lot will provide parking for commuters, visitors and employees of local businesses to relieve parking congestion in downtown.

At the October 5th city council meeting the council approved a contract with the Oak Harbor firm, Cane Engineering, to develop a preliminary set of plans and a construction cost estimate for the project.
